Sailing Yacht “A” at 143m is the world’s largest sailing yacht; she was built in steel at Nobiskrug shipyard in Germany, with the owner taking delivery in May 2017. A feature of the yacht is the many topside doors and platforms which were constructed in carbon fibre by C-Quip in New Zealand. Carbon fibre was chosen as the construction material for the doors and platforms mainly for its weight saving over steel. Steel doors were expected to weigh 120 Tonnes, and the delivered carbon doors weighed only 35 Tonnes - a significant saving. The lighter doors also presented an opportunity to reduce the size, weight and cost of the hydraulic systems needed to move them.
